Mr. AJMAL was Present at Activities of Processing Trade and Industry Transfer into Chongqing

The event of Processing Trade and Industrial Transfer Entering Chongqing, a key part of "Going out, Bringing in" strategy of Chongqing Municipal Government, was held on July 16, 2008, in Empark Grand Hotel, Chongqing. Ministry of Commerce held a plate awarding ceremony for Chongqing and 10 other geographically preponderant cities in western China to become major locations for gradient transfer of processing trade. Chongqing is the largest location in western regions. Mr. Wang Hongju, the Deputy Secretary of Chongqing Municipal Party Committee and Mayor of Chongqing Municpal Government, introduced the advantages of Chongqing as an industrial transfer location to 108 domestic and overseas processing trade magnates. Mr. Sajjad AJMAL, Representative and Head of UNIDO Regional Office in the People's Republic of China, Mongolia, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and Republic of Korea, was invited by SPX-CQ to participate in the event. He gave speech on World Industrial Transfer as a Potential Source of South-South Industrial Cooperation at the Industrial Transfer Forum.


Chongqing processing trade is ready to be rolled-out.
At present, due to the rising cost of land, energy, labor and etc. in eastern region, processing trade industry starts to transfer into Central and Western China. Therefore, the middle and western China (including Chongqing) will be the new land for the development of processing trade in mainland.
"Last year, the total import and export value of processing trade was about USD510 million, 17% higher than that of the previous year." Mr. Wang Hongju said. Since the beginning of this year, the product structure of Chongqing processing trade has been upgraded. The export of traditional fibre glass roving and chopped fibre glass increased than last year; special purpose ship, transformer, and medical devices become the new spot of processing trade.

Advantages of Chongqing as the transfer location
As an important industrial and commercial city in Central and West China, the economic center of upper Yangtze River, the municipality with coordinative development of urban-rural area, national important modern manufacturing base, and integrated transport hub in SW China, Chongqing has its pillar industries, such as hi-tech, automotive, motorcycle, and equipment manufacturing. The other nine industrial clusters are being rapidly developed including natural gas chemical industry, coal chemical industry, general purpose engine, and etc. In addition, Chongqing has rich human resources with 56 universities and 360 vocational schools. Processing trade transfer to Chongqing will bring the textile, garment, shoes, and other process industries to the two wings of Chongqing, thus new employment opportunities for Wanzhou and Fuling ( the Three Gorges Area).
Concerning taking over the coastal processing trade and industry transfer, Chongqing will mainly focus on 5 types: labor-intensive industry, leading enterprise and large enterprise, overseas market oriented industry, precision and deep processing industry and supporting industry.

China will play an important role in promoting South-South Industrial Cooperation
In his speech, Mr. AJMAL mainly introduced SPX-CQ. SPX-CQ is the first SPX established by UNIDO in China. So far, SPX-CQ has been running well and it has been one of the most active SPXs in Asia. In future, UNIDO hopes to cooperate with China, especially Chongqing on environment protection.
Meanwhile, Mr. AJMAL emphasized that China's extensive industrialization programme and overseas investment could play a major role in promoting South-South cooperation.
